Manor Health has been supporting our clients with Weight loss and Weight management for many years and as an approved Wegovy provider we truly understand the challenges of battling obesity.

Maria Jacobs, Director of Manor Health explains,

“Obesity can seem straightforward to explain. If a person consumes more calories than they need, they gain weight. But in reality, it is not that simple. It is a complex and chronic disease for some, and losing weight is not just a question of eating less and moving more. Here at Manor Health, we understand the struggle and are have introduced GP led Consultation days along with tailored support to ensure our clients are successful in their endeavours not just for the short term but for life.”

In this Blog we are discussing the “truth” about obesity and unpacking the various challenges (as a society) we are facing:

Biological Factors

  • Genetics: Genetics plays a role in how our bodies store fat, how we metabolise food. Some people may have a genetic predisposition that makes them more susceptible to obesity.
  • Metabolism: People have different metabolic rates, meaning some may burn calories faster than others. A slower metabolism can make it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.
  • Hormones: Hormones like leptin (which signals you are full) and ghrelin (which stimulates hunger) influence appetite and fat storage. In some people, these hormonal signals can become dysregulated, leading to overeating or poor fat regulation.

Environmental Factors

  • Food Environment: The availability of high-calorie, processed foods and sugary drinks has skyrocketed in many places. These foods are often marketed as convenient, cheap, and tasty, but they contribute to weight gain when consumed in excess.
  • Physical Activity: Modern lifestyles, especially in urbanised areas, often involve less physical activity. Sedentary behaviors like sitting at desks, driving cars, and watching television contribute to weight gain.
  • Built Environment: Living in areas with limited access to safe parks, walkable neighborhoods, or healthy food options can make it difficult for individuals to maintain a healthy weight.

Social and Psychological Factors

  • Stress and Emotional Eating: Stress, depression, and anxiety can contribute to overeating or eating unhealthy foods. People may use food as a way to cope with emotional distress.
  • Socioeconomic Status: People from lower socioeconomic backgrounds often face barriers to healthy eating, such as limited access to fresh produce, healthcare, or spaces for physical activity.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Cultural norms about body image, food, and exercise can shape how people view and manage their weight. In some cultures, larger body sizes are celebrated, while in others, there may be significant stigma around obesity.

Health Impacts

  • Chronic Diseases: Obesity is a major risk factor for various health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, sleep apnea, and joint problems.
  • Quality of Life: Obesity can affect mobility, mental health, and social relationships. It can lead to feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, and discrimination.
  • Mortality: Obesity is associated with a higher risk of premature death due to its link to multiple chronic diseases.

Solutions and Interventions

  • Dietary Changes: Reducing the consumption of processed foods and focusing on nutrient-dense, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help manage weight.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity is essential for weight management and overall health. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises.
  • Behavioral Therapy: Addressing emotional eating, building healthier relationships with food, and improving self-control are important aspects of long-term weight management.
  • Medical Interventions: In some cases, medications or weight-loss surgery may be recommended. Wegovy is a leading weightloss medication that is now available at Manor Health.
